How we designed Hourly Humans to be safe for women

By the Hourly Humans team

When we first talked about building Hourly Humans, the most important question we asked ourselves was: would we feel comfortable if someone we loved — a sister, a friend, a mother — used this platform? If the answer was no, we had no business building it.

The answer, after a lot of thinking and a lot of design iteration, is yes. Here's exactly how we got there.

The six things we built

💬
Messaging before booking is mandatory
The "Book Now" button is locked until you've exchanged at least one message with the human. This isn't a soft suggestion — it's a hard gate in the product. You cannot book someone you haven't spoken to.
📍
Public meetups only — enforced by policy
Every booking must specify a public location. Private homes, isolated areas, and unlisted venues are explicitly prohibited in our community guidelines. Humans who request private meetings are removed.
📤
Share your plan in one tap
On the booking confirmation screen, a single button generates a summary — who you're meeting, when, and where — and opens WhatsApp so you can share it with anyone you trust before you leave.
Verified profiles only
Every human on the platform verifies their email and phone number before their profile goes live. No anonymous listings. Real photos are required — stock photos and faceless profiles are rejected.
Two-way ratings after every session
Both the buyer and the human rate each session after it ends. Low ratings trigger a review. Patterns of poor behaviour — rudeness, boundary violations, no-shows — result in removal from the platform.
🚩
Report and block, always visible
Every profile and every message has a report button. Reports go directly to our safety team and are reviewed within 24 hours. Blocking is immediate and permanent — the blocked user cannot see your profile or contact you again.

What we're still building

We're not done. On our roadmap: an emergency contact feature that lets you designate someone who gets notified if you don't check in after a session, in-app location sharing during meetups, and a dedicated safety line for urgent concerns.

We know trust is earned slowly and lost quickly. We intend to keep earning it.

If you have a safety concern — about a specific profile, a message, or anything else — email us directly at safety@hourlyhumans.in. We read every report personally.
